On July 19, 2019, this book won the Japanese Association for Coastal Zone Studies (JACZS) “Publication and Cultural Award”.
This book has been awarded for its presentation of the requirements in creating the Satoumi in specific and diverse examples, and a concept that will be a new approach to coastal area management. These facts contribute the improvement in understanding and recoginition of the importance of coastal zone. In this book, the Japanese meaning of the concept of “Satoumi”, which refers to enriching of our closely-related sea by active engaging of people, was analyzed through the various Satoumi cases in Onna Village and Shiraho of Okinawa Prefecture, Kashiwa Island of Kochi Prefecture, Hinase town of Okayama, Indonesia, Fiji and Florida. And this deepens the connection between people and the sea and reflects the pathway of creating Satoumi.
The project title is “Co-creation of Sustainable Regional Innovation for Reducing Risk of High-impact Environmental Pollution”. SAKAKIBARA will be assigned to RIHN (cross-appointment with Ehime University) in June and will start pre-research (PR) at the same time. Mr. SAKAKIBARA’s RIHN Project will be developed by applying the transdisciplinary research approach to solving the problem based on the common interests in many aspects with the TD-VULS project. In the future, the SAKAKIBARA’s project and the TD-VULS project will profoundly collaborate and we are planning to promote effective and impactable TD research. By doing so, I hope that the two projects will give even more significant results.
